A simple, flavorful, and budget-friendly ground beef hamburger recipe perfect for family meals. Juicy patties with balanced seasoning and easy preparation.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ¼ cup (30g) breadcrumbs (optional)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or olive oil
  • 4 burger buns (preferably brioche or potato buns)
  • Toppings: sliced cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, ketchup, mustard, mayo (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine 1 pound ground beef, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and ½ teaspoon black pepper in a mixing bowl. Add ¼ cup breadcrumbs and 1 large egg if using. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Divide mixture into 4 equal portions. Wet hands lightly and form each into a ¾ inch thick patty. Press a shallow indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb.
  3. Place patties on a plate and refrigerate for 10 minutes to rest.
  4. Preheat grill to medium-high (375°F) or heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon oil.
  5. Cook patties 4-5 minutes on the first side without moving. Flip and cook another 4-5 minutes for medium doneness (internal temp 160°F). Add cheese slices in the last minute if desired and cover to melt.
  6. Transfer cooked patties to a plate and let rest for 5 minutes.
  7. Toast buns lightly on grill or skillet if desired. Assemble burgers with patties and favorite toppings. Serve immediately.

Notes

Do not overmix the meat to avoid tough burgers. Press a shallow indentation in the center of each patty to prevent puffing. Let patties rest before cooking and after cooking to retain juiciness. Use a meat thermometer to ensure internal temperature reaches 160°F for safety. For gluten-free, skip breadcrumbs or use gluten-free crumbs and substitute buns with lettuce wraps.
