This easy spooky spider web dip is a quick, no-cook Halloween appetizer made with black beans and sour cream. It’s perfect for parties, looks impressive, and tastes delicious.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (15 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice (freshly squeezed)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 12 tablespoons milk (optional, to thin sour cream)
  • Fresh cilantro (chopped, for garnish)
  • Black olives (sliced, for garnish)
  • Green onions (sliced, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Drain and rinse the canned black beans thoroughly under cold water. Let them drain completely.
  2. Add the drained black beans, garlic powder, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, lime juice, and olive oil to a food processor. Pulse a few times, then run continuously for 30-45 seconds until smooth and spreadable (like hummus). Add a tablespoon of water if too thick.
  3. Taste the mixture and adjust seasoning as needed (more salt, lime, or cumin).
  4. Transfer the black bean dip to a round serving dish (9-10 inches). Spread into an even layer about 1/2 inch thick with a spatula.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk the sour cream until smooth. If too thick to drizzle, add milk 1 tablespoon at a time until it reaches a heavy cream consistency. Transfer to a squeeze bottle or piping bag.
  6. Starting from the center of the dip, squeeze a small circle of sour cream. Then squeeze larger concentric circles around it, leaving about an inch between circles, until you reach the edge (4-6 circles total).
  7. Take a knife or toothpick and drag it from the center outward through all the sour cream circles to the edge. Repeat every inch or so around the dip (8-10 spokes total), wiping the knife clean between each drag.
  8. Place sliced black olives on the web to look like spiders (one in the center and a few on the outer edges).
  9. Sprinkle chopped cilantro and green onions over the top. Serve immediately with tortilla chips, carrot sticks, cucumber rounds, or bell pepper slices. If refrigerated, let sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, use room-temperature sour cream. The black bean base can be made up to 24 hours in advance, but add the sour cream web no more than 1-2 hours before serving. For a vegan version, use plant-based sour cream. For a spicier dip, add a chopped jalapeño or chipotle powder to the bean mixture.
