A simple, affordable, and quick hot dog recipe that delivers juicy, flavorful hot dogs perfect for busy weeknights or casual meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 beef or pork hot dogs (about 12 ounces or 340 grams)
  • 8 soft hot dog buns
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) water
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Optional toppings: yellow mustard, ketchup, chopped onions, relish, shredded cheese, sauerkraut

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.
  2. Pat the hot dogs dry with a paper towel, then roll them in the spice mix until evenly coated.
  3. Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the hot dogs and cook for about 3 minutes, turning occasionally until lightly browned.
  4. Add 1/4 cup (60 ml) water to the pan, cover immediately, and let the hot dogs steam for 4 minutes.
  5. While the hot dogs steam, brush the insides of the buns with melted butter.
  6. Once the water has evaporated, remove the hot dogs and set aside.
  7. Add the buns to the skillet, buttered side down, and toast for 1-2 minutes or until golden and slightly crispy.
  8. Place each hot dog in a toasted bun and add your favorite toppings.
  9. Serve immediately while warm and juicy.

Notes

Do not pierce the hot dogs to keep them juicy. Use medium heat to avoid burning the casing. Steaming with water is key to juicy hot dogs. Butter buns generously for a golden crust. Toast buns while hot dogs steam to save time. Customize spice blend to taste. Keep cooked hot dogs warm in a low oven if preparing for a crowd.
