A stunning, deep ruby-red sangria made with blood oranges, red wine, and a hint of cinnamon. Perfect for Halloween parties, it’s deceptively simple to make and improves overnight.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (Spanish Tempranillo or medium-bodied Merlot)
  • 3–4 blood oranges, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup blood orange juice (fresh-squeezed from about 2–3 extra oranges)
  • 1/4 cup honey or agave syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup orange liqueur (Triple Sec, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier)
  • 1 cup sparkling water or club soda (add just before serving)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
  • 1 cup frozen grapes or blackberries
  • Ice cubes (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Squeeze your blood oranges first. Roll them firmly on the counter before cutting to loosen the juices. Cut 2-3 oranges in half and juice them until you have 1/2 cup. Set the juice aside.
  2. Slice the remaining blood oranges into thin rounds, about 1/4 inch thick. Remove any visible seeds.
  3. In your pitcher, combine the wine, blood orange juice, honey, and orange liqueur. Whisk or stir gently until the honey dissolves completely.
  4. Add the sliced blood oranges and cinnamon stick. Use a wooden spoon to gently press the fruit slices against the sides of the pitcher to release their oils and juices.
  5. Taste and adjust sweetness. If too tart, add another tablespoon of honey. If too sweet, add a splash more wine or a squeeze of lemon.
  6. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally 4-6 hours or overnight.
  7. Just before serving, add the frozen grapes or blackberries. Stir gently to chill. Then pour in the sparkling water and give one more gentle stir.
  8. Serve in glasses over ice if desired, making sure each glass gets some fruit slices and frozen berries. Garnish with a fresh blood orange slice or a cinnamon stick.

Notes

The sangria improves overnight. Remove the cinnamon stick after 24 hours to prevent it from becoming too woody. For a non-alcoholic version, replace wine with cranberry-pomegranate juice and sparkling water, and skip the orange liqueur.
