A quick, crunchy, and colorful patriotic puppy chow snack perfect for 4th of July and summer celebrations. Made with crispy rice cereal, peanut butter, powdered sugar, and festive red, white, and blue sprinkles.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups crispy rice cereal
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup red, white, and blue festive sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Prepare your workspace: Gather all ingredients and equipment. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. Melt the butter and peanut butter: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter and 1 cup of creamy peanut butter. Microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between each, until smooth and well blended (about 1-2 minutes). Alternatively, melt over low heat in a small saucepan. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  3. Mix the cereal: Pour 6 cups of crispy rice cereal into a large mixing bowl. Slowly drizzle the warm peanut butter mixture over the cereal, folding gently with a spatula or wooden spoon until all pieces are evenly coated.
  4. Coat with powdered sugar: Transfer the coated cereal into a large resealable plastic bag or clean pillowcase. Add 1 cup of sifted powdered sugar. Seal the bag and shake vigorously until the cereal is thoroughly coated and looks snowy white. Break up any clumps inside the bag.
  5. Add the festive sprinkles: Empty the powdered sugar-coated puppy chow onto the parchment-lined baking sheet. Sprinkle 1 cup of red, white, and blue sprinkles evenly over the top. Lightly toss with a spatula to distribute without crushing the cereal. Let the snack cool and set for about 10 minutes.
  6. Serve or store: Once cooled, transfer the puppy chow to a large serving bowl or airtight container. Enjoy immediately or store at room temperature for up to a week.

Notes

If peanut butter mixture is too thick, warm a few extra seconds or add a teaspoon of vegetable oil to thin. Avoid overheating peanut butter mixture to keep cereal crisp. Use sturdy sprinkles that won’t bleed color. Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. Avoid refrigeration to maintain crunch. Can substitute almond or sunflower butter for nut-free version. Add mini chocolate chips after coating for a chocolate twist.
