Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 500g), peeled and diced into ½-inch cubes
  • 1 can (15 oz or 425g) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (14.5 oz or 411g) fire-roasted diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 oz or 227g) tomato sauce
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups (480ml) low-sodium chicken broth
  • Optional toppings: shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream or Greek yogurt, fresh cilantro, diced avocado, lime wedges, sliced jalapeños

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients first. Dice the onion, mince the garlic, peel and cube the sweet potatoes into ½-inch pieces. Drain and rinse the black beans.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Once it shimmers (about 30 seconds), add the diced onion. Cook for 4-5 minutes until translucent and starting to brown at the edges.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Don’t let it burn.
  4. Add the ground turkey to the pot. Break it up with a wooden spoon and cook until no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Do not drain the fat.
  5. Stir in the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, to toast the spices.
  6. Add the diced sweet potatoes and stir to coat them in the spice mixture. Let them cook for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Pour in the diced tomatoes (with their juices), tomato sauce, and chicken broth. Stir everything together, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.
  8. Bring the chili to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender.
  9. Stir in the rinsed black beans and cook for 5 more minutes, uncovered, to allow the chili to thicken slightly. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  10. Remove from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. Serve with desired toppings.

Notes

For best flavor, toast the spices with the meat before adding liquid. Cut sweet potatoes evenly for consistent cooking. This chili tastes even better the next day as flavors meld. For a thicker chili, mash some sweet potatoes against the pot. For a vegetarian version, omit turkey and add an extra can of beans plus diced bell pepper and corn.
