Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 2 pounds or 900g) β€” Honeycrisp or Granny Smith recommended
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (15g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) salted caramel sauce
  • 1 cup (90g) old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup (95g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Extra salted caramel sauce for drizzling
  • Flaky sea salt (like Maldon) for garnish
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Position the rack in the center of the oven.
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples into roughly 1/4-inch thick slices (about 6 cups total).
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently until every apple slice is coated. Let sit for 5 minutes.
  4. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold butter cubes. Using a pastry cutter or fingers, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse sand with some pea-sized butter pieces remaining.
  5. Spread the apple mixture evenly in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Drizzle the 1/2 cup of salted caramel sauce over the apples and gently swirl it through with a spoon.
  6. Sprinkle the oat crumble evenly over the apples. Do not press it down.
  7. Place the dish on a baking sheet and bake for 40-45 minutes, until the filling is bubbly around the edges and the topping is golden brown. If the topping browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes.
  8. Let the crisp rest on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before serving.
  9. Drizzle with extra salted caramel sauce, sprinkle with flaky sea salt, and top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Serve warm.

Notes

Use cold butter for the crumble to ensure a crunchy topping. Don’t overmix the apple filling to avoid a watery crisp. Let the crisp rest before serving to allow the filling to set. For best results, use thick salted caramel sauce. You can make extra crumble and freeze it for later.
