This homemade elderberry syrup is a comforting, immune-boosting remedy made with dried elderberries, ginger, cinnamon, and raw honey. It’s a simple and effective way to support your family’s health during cold and flu season.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup dried elderberries
  • 4 cups filtered water
  • 1 large thumb-sized piece fresh ginger, sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 cup raw honey (or to taste)
  • Optional: Peel from 1 organic orange

Instructions

  1. Combine the dried elderberries and 4 cups of filtered water in a medium to large saucepan. Stir to ensure berries are mostly submerged.
  2. Add the sliced ginger, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and orange peel (if using) to the pot.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low.
  4. Simmer gently with the lid slightly ajar for 30-40 minutes, until the liquid has reduced by about half and the berries are plump and soft.
  5. Remove the pot from heat. Use the back of a wooden spoon to gently mash the berries against the side of the pot to release more flavor.
  6. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a large bowl or measuring cup. Let it drip for a few minutes without pressing on the berries.
  7. Allow the strained liquid to cool to room temperature (about 15-20 minutes).
  8. Once cool, stir in the raw honey until fully dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness if desired.
  9. Pour the finished syrup into a clean glass jar or bottle. Seal tightly and store in the refrigerator.

Notes

Do not add honey to hot liquid as it destroys beneficial enzymes. Let the syrup rest overnight in the fridge for the best flavor. For a crystal-clear syrup, strain twice through a coffee filter or double layer of cheesecloth. Store in the refrigerator for 3-4 weeks or freeze in ice cube trays for up to 6 months.
